🌱 High Tide Pivots, Cannabis Philanthropy, Medical Insurance

Welcome to Rise & Roll, a bi-weekly newsletter that keeps you smart, savvy, and always in the loop on the latest in cannabis.

Here’s what we have on deck for today…

High Tide shifts German cannabis strategy

High Tide is rethinking its plans to enter Germany's cannabis market. The Canadian retailer had planned to buy 51% of German company Purecan for €4.8 million. But after checking things out more carefully, High Tide is reconsidering the deal.

The company still wants to break into Germany's market, which is one of the world's largest cannabis importers. They might still work with Purecan differently or find another way in.

This change comes as Germany's political landscape shifts. The recent election of conservative leader Friedrich Merz could slow down or reverse the country's cannabis reforms, showing how cannabis businesses must stay flexible when expanding globally.

Cannabis giant gives back to local communities

Green Thumb Industries is showing what it means to be a good neighbor in the cannabis world. Their latest "Growing For Good" report highlights how they raised $1.6 million for important causes through smart retail programs.

Beyond just donations, the company helped:

  • Clear criminal records for 175 people

  • Saved enough energy to take 850 cars off the road

  • And planted 60,000 trees

"This isn't just philanthropy – it's our culture," says CEO Ben Kovler.

For cannabis businesses looking to stand out, Green Thumb's approach proves that structured community programs don't just build goodwill — they can become a core part of your brand identity.

Insurance may soon cover New Mexico

New Mexico lawmakers are pushing a bill that would make insurance companies pay for medical cannabis.

House Bill 527 would force both private and public insurers to cover medical weed costs. This includes employer plans, Medicaid, and government employee coverage.

The bill comes as New Mexico's medical cannabis program has been shrinking since adult-use sales began in 2022. Patient numbers dropped from 135,000 to just 79,400 today.

If passed, this could bring thousands of patients back to medical programs and boost dispensary sales. It could also start a trend for other states to follow.
