Massachusetts cannabis sales shatter records in 2024
Massachusetts just showed what a maturing cannabis market can do, racking up $1.64 billion in sales last year. The state crushed it with three record-breaking months, including a massive $147 million haul in August.
What's really turning heads? Worcester County is emerging as a powerhouse, matching Middlesex County with 86 licenses. And with social consumption licenses on deck for 2025, Massachusetts is proving that even established markets can find ways to grow.
This isn't just about breaking records — it's about showing how smart regulation and industry collaboration can build a sustainable, expanding market.
Cannabis pioneer David Watson leaves lasting legacy
The cannabis world recently lost an industry pioneer. On January 27th, 2025, David Watson — aka "Sam the Skunkman” — passed away.
As the mind behind legendary strains like Skunk #1 and Haze, Watson wasn't just a breeder — he was one of cannabis's master architects. His work went far beyond cultivation, leading to groundbreaking medical research and FDA-approved treatments through GW Pharmaceuticals.
Watson's passion for sharing knowledge and advancing cannabis science touched countless lives. As fellow breeder Ryan Lee said, "To me, David is cannabis."
His spirit of innovation and generosity will continue to inspire the next generation of cannabis pioneers.
